Chicago’s convention lays to rest the dark legacy of 1968.

AngloPress: Kamala Harris delivered her acceptance speech in a vibrant, festival-like atmosphere at the United Center. As delegates depart, Chicago hopes its reputation as a world-class host city has been revitalized.

Delegates filled the United Center, enjoying performances from P!nk and The Chicks, while Beyoncé’s “Freedom” blared from the speakers—though the star herself was absent. The main event was Harris, who used her speech to draw sharp contrasts with former President Donald Trump and urged voters to embrace a new chapter.

“With this election, our nation has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past. A chance to chart a new way forward, not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans,” Harris declared.

As the campaign shifts towards November, the focus will be on the upcoming debate with Trump and the inevitable attack ads.
Chicago is also looking to move beyond the shadow of its tumultuous 1968 convention. Despite concerns about protests mirroring those of the past—driven by economic discontent, war, and disillusioned youth—this year’s convention was markedly peaceful.

Mayor Brandon Johnson, when asked if he had been concerned about potential unrest, responded, “I don’t know what worrying gets you. So I don’t really live in that space.”
Johnson credited the efforts of his administration and the City Council for ensuring a smooth event, avoiding the chaos that marred the 1968 convention when police clashed violently with anti-war protesters. While Chicago hosted a peaceful Democratic convention in 1996, the specter of 1968 still loomed over this year’s event.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling played a key role in maintaining order, particularly during Monday’s protest against U.S. policies toward Israel. Public affairs consultant Thom Serafin praised Snelling and the mayor for their success in preventing disruptive protests.

Democrats in Chicago believe Trump’s frequent criticisms of the city—especially on issues of crime and immigration—are unfounded.

“We’ve put on a world-class convention for the world to see. Whatever Donald Trump has to say about this city, I think we’ve proved this week that they’re not true,” said lobbyist Ron Holmes before Harris’ speech. “Chicago has shown up.”
