AngloPress: The sight of Tim Walz’s 17-year-old son, Gus, tearing up with pride during his father’s vice presidential nomination acceptance speech on Wednesday night quickly became an iconic feel-good moment of the convention.But then came the inevitable social media backlash.
Conservative commentator Ann Coulter shared an article on X featuring a photo of Gus in tears, captioning it with, “Talk about weird…”
The online response was swift and scathing.
“I can see why a child loving their parents would feel foreign to you,” tweeted Tommy Vietor, a former Obama staffer turned liberal podcaster.
Many pointed out that Coulter's remark was particularly cruel, given that Gus's parents had previously shared with *People* magazine that their son has a nonverbal learning disorder, ADHD, and an anxiety disorder.
“I am neurodivergent. When I was 14, I was diagnosed with ADHD, OCD, and several learning disorders, including dyscalculia,” wrote Shannon Watts, founder of gun safety groups Moms Demand Action and Everytown. “We’re not weird, we’re wonderful. And we’re your family, friends, and fellow Americans.”
Coulter soon became a trending topic on X, along with Gus Walz and the phrase “He’s 17.” Though Coulter deleted her post, the online backlash has continued to grow.
