AngloPress: Jennifer Lopez made the difficult decision to divorce Ben Affleck with careful consideration, a source exclusively tells PEOPLE.
After the 55-year-old singer filed for divorce from the 52-year-old actor on Tuesday, Aug. 20, the source reveals that she ultimately decided "it's time to move on" for several reasons.
"She's very disappointed and sad, but Ben hasn’t shown any signs of wanting to save their marriage. He hasn’t demonstrated the commitment or interest needed to make it work. At this point, she feels she has to prioritize herself," the source says.
According to multiple insiders, Lopez filed for divorce in the Los Angeles County Superior Court on the second anniversary of their wedding celebration in Georgia, where they had gathered with family and friends.
The Georgia ceremony took place just a month after Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck officially tied the knot in an intimate Las Vegas ceremony on July 17, 2022.
Lopez and Affleck rekindled their romance in April 2021, years after their first relationship, which included an engagement and a postponed September 2003 wedding. Their renewed relationship quickly became public, with appearances at the Venice Film Festival in September 2021 and going Instagram official in July 2021.
While speaking to PEOPLE in February 2022, Lopez admitted they had "a little bit of fear" about dating in the public eye again, but said, "I feel so lucky and happy and proud to be with him. It's a beautiful love story that we got a second chance." She emphasized that their reunion felt different this time, adding, "We both were like, 'Wow, we're so happy, and we don't want any of that to come into play again.' We're older now, we're smarter, we have more experience, we're at different places in our lives, we have kids now, and we have to be very conscious of those things. We're so protective because it is such a beautiful time for all of us."
Their recent split comes after spending the summer on opposite coasts. "They’re moving on separately. Jennifer is trying to find a new home to start fresh," an insider told PEOPLE in early August, adding that she "hasn't seen Ben for weeks."
Despite the circumstances, Lopez is making the best of the situation. "Considering everything that's going on, Jennifer is having a good summer. She's been able to focus on what's next and has enjoyed spending time with her kids, family, and friends. She always has a good attitude, even when things aren't perfect," the insider shared.
