ANGLOPRESS --- Phil Donahue, the trailblazing talk show host who revolutionized daytime television by addressing controversial topics with a live audience, has passed away at the age of 88 after a prolonged illness, his family announced on Monday. In a statement to ANGLOPRESS, his family shared that Donahue died peacefully at home on Sunday night, surrounded by loved ones, including his wife of 44 years, Marlo Thomas, his sister, children, grandchildren, and his cherished golden retriever, Charlie.
The news of his passing has been met with widespread sadness, including a heartfelt tribute from fellow talk show host Oprah Winfrey, who expressed her gratitude to Donahue on social media.
“There wouldn’t have been an Oprah Show without Phil Donahue being the first to prove that daytime talk and women watching should be taken seriously,” Winfrey wrote. “He was a pioneer. I’m glad I got to thank him for it. Rest in peace, Phil.”
Donahue was the iconic face of "The Phil Donahue Show" for nearly three decades, from 1967 to 1996.
Although "The Phil Donahue Show" ended 28 years ago, Donahue remained in the national spotlight as recently as May, when he, along with 18 other honorees, received the Medal of Freedom from President Joe Biden. This prestigious award is the nation’s highest civilian honor.
